Basell to construct new PE plant in Wesseling, Germany

18.06.2001

Basell announced today that it would construct a new 320KT high density Polyethylene (HDPE) plant at Wesseling, Germany. Start-up is planned for the fourth quarter of 2003.

The new world-scale plant will produce HDPE pipe grades in black, blue and orange-yellow -- using the Advanced Cascade Process, the latest generation of the Hostalen Slurry technology. Construction is expected to begin in October.

Hostalen HDPE pipe grades are well-established brands used for water, sewage and gas-distribution pressure pipe applications. The resin's ability to withstand elevated pressures and temperatures makes it ideal for these demanding pipe end-uses. With Hostalen HDPE, pipes can be produced that are light in weight for easy transport and mounting, and can provide assembly efficiency and resist aggressive and abrasive materials.

“This is a very exciting and important step for Basell’s PE business,” said Rolf Richter, Basell’s chief operating officer for polyethylene. “This plant will enable Basell to play an expanded role in the Western Europe pipe market, which is expected to grow at the rate of 5.5% per year through 2009.”

Discussions have begun with relevant local authorities regarding obtaining the necessary regulatory and other approvals for the project. Authorities have already indicated they are very satisfied with the safety and environmental standards that have been developed for the plant so far.

“This substantial new investment will expand our PE business in the important pipe segment and further strengthen our position as a global polyolefins leader by bringing more balance to our volume business portfolio,” said Volker Trautz, Basell’s president and CEO.
